Booker T. Washington National Monument - Hardy, VA

Today, sister and I went on a day trip to Hardy, VA to the Booker T. Washington National Monument, which is part of the National Park Service.

This is the location of his boyhood home on the Burroughs plantation.  All buildings on site are reconstructions.

From past experiences, the National Parks that are kind of off the beaten path do not have restaurants near by, so it is best to bring a picnic lunch, which is what we did.

We arrived a little before noon, and there are several picnic tables in a wooded section over looking the Visitor Center.

The Visitor Center has a short film, but we chose to see that after we walked the 1 1/2 mile Jack-O-Lantern Branch Heritage Trail around the property.

We were not slackers today; no short cuts

The Jack-O-Lantern Trail connects with the Plantation Trail loop which circles back to the Visitor Center.

On the way home, we stopped for ice cream at Homestead Creamery on Booker T. Washington Hwy.
