Wilmington, NC and Other Places - Day 3

Thursday, March 30

Blended amid a car dealership is Bitty and Beau's Coffee. I found out about them before we went to Wilmington, and knew we had to go!  The owners named their business after two of their children who have special needs, and offer employment to others with intellectual and developmental disabilities.  Read more about their story here Bitty and Beau's Coffee.

They really have a unique operating system.  Two matching playing cards are kept in plastic paper sleeves.  Upon ordering, the customer is given one of the cards to put at their table.  Meanwhile, the second card is kept with your receipt and order.  An employee knows which order belongs to you by finding the matching card on the table.

I like to plan vacations around National Parks, and there happens to be one near Wilmington.  After our morning coffee at Bitty and Beau's, we went to Moores Creek Battlefield, a Revolutionary War site in Currie, NC.

Visitor Center

We came here all because of this stamp

Wall of Events:  Above the green line is what happened during the war; below is how it pertained to North Carolina.

After watching a short film about the Battle on The Bridge, we took a walk around the battlefield, which is about 30 minutes.

A boardwalk bridge over a swamp area

The Loyalists came to this bridge in hopes of finding the Patriots, only to find the camp fire still burning, and them gone.  They crossed a bridge in this location and soon found out the Patriots had set up camp on the other side.  Many Loyalists died that evening and only one Patriot.

This grave is for Private John Grady, "the first martyr in the cause of freedom in North Carolina, and the only Whig killed in this battle."

On our way home, we stopped in Hamlet to see their train depot that is still used by Amtrak.  Inside is a small museum.

The basement has a large display that was interesting.

Wilmington, NC and Other Places - Day 2

Wednesday, March 29

Our morning event on this day was the U.S.S. North Carolina.  This was my first time to see it.

After spending 2+ hours on the battleship, we ate lunch at Charlie Graingers.

     We then headed downtown.

River Walk

We had afternoon coffee and a pastry at 24 South Coffee House.

That evening we went to Wrightsville Beach.  It was cold so we didn't stay long.
